Before we list the entry requirements for degree in nursing at Kenyatta University, its important to note that Kenyatta university offers two degrees in one when a student enrolls for degree in nursing. You will graduate with BSc in Nursing and Upiblic health which are two courses combined into one. This gives mursing graduates from kenyatta university a chance to specialize in public helth in their masters. Entry Requirements for BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (NURSING AND PUBLIC HEALTH)
Entry Requirements
Candidates wishing to enrol for the Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing shall have obtained a mean grade of at least C+ at K.C.S.E or its equivalent and passed the cluster subject as indicated below:

Minimum of grade C in KCSE or KCE Division II and a Diploma in Nursing from a recognized medical training institution or its equivalent and must have been licensed by the Nursing council Kenya
Note: Holders of diplomas in Nursing must have practiced for at least 2 years or be ready to undertake a one year internship upon completion of their degree program.
Credit Transfer System.
Candidates holding Diplomas in Nursing may have a credit transfer of up to 18 units.
Programme of Study
The Bachelor of Science degree programme in Nursing shall be completed when a registered student has taken and passed in all 94 units including 3 university common units and 1 school common unit.
Duration of study
The BSc nursing program is offered in two modes.
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (regular) program is offered in 12 semesters (4 calendar years) for direct entry.
The Bachelor of Science in nursing school based program is offered in 8 sessions (2 1/2 calendar years) for upgrading students.
The program shall comprise lectures, practicals, field work and clinical experience. Graduates of the BSC Nursing program (direct entry) shall proceed for a one year internship program
MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NURSING SCIENCE
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
a) The common regulations for all Masters Degrees in the university and the school of health sciences shall apply.
b) A holder of a bachelor of science in nursing or its equivalent from a recognized university.
c) Must be registered by the nursing council of Kenya with a valid nursing practice license and at least two years of nursing practice.
DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME OF STUDY
1. The Master of Science in nursing degree Programme shall take a minimum of 2 academic years.
2. The degree shall be offered by course work, examination, practical assessment and thesis.
3. The course work shall comprise of a series of lectures, demonstration, seminars, case presentations, discussions, tutorials, practical sessions and educational field trips.
4. During the first two semesters, the student will take 11 core units.
5. The third semester the students will go for a practical experience for 14 weeks and undertake a practical examination.
During the second year the student will take 4 specialized units, carry out research and rotate in the clinical area of specialization.
ACADEMIC ORGANIZATION OF THE PROGRAMME

The Master of Science in nursing degree program will be offered in the following areas:

• Master of science in Nursing- mental health and psychiatry
• Master of science in Nursing - leadership and management
• Master of science in Nursing- critical care
• Master of science in Nursing – uro-nephrology nursing
• Master of science in Nursing- medical surgical nursing
• Master of science in Nursing- paediatric nursing
• Master of science in Nursing- midwifery/obstetric nursing
• Master of science in Nursing- community health nursing
• Master of science in Nursing- nursing education
• Consider master of science in nursing- neurology nursing
Admission Requirements:
a) The common regulations for all Masters Degrees in the university and the college of health sciences shall apply.

c) Must be registered by the nursing council of Kenya with a valid nursing practice license and at least two years of nursing practice.
Accreditation
The program has been locally accredited by the Nursing Council of Kenya (The regulatory authority of nursing training in Kenya).

STUDENTS ISSUES:
Our student population is multiracial, multi- cultural and multi – ethnic. Students receive support through mentorship programs and counseling services.
Students are engaged in various co – circular activities such as first aid, sports, community outreach, culture week, career week and welfare associations.
STAFF ISSUES:
The staff are highly qualified with special interest in the following fields:
Safe motherhood, Community Health Nursing, Medical education, Curriculum, Clinical instruction and management of schools of Nursing and Hospitals.
Our staffs have a vast experience in the nursing profession and other medical fields.
The current academic staff engaged is currently 18. Other expert lecturers come on board from time to time.
The staffs are engaged in research in the fields of Nursing, Public Health, Reproductive Health and Pediatrics Health.
The staffs are regularly called upon to offer consultancy in curriculum development, training, to serve as experts in professional bodies and other organizations.

a) Application forms can either be obtained from Kenyatta University, Admission Block, room No. 012, Regional Centres located in Nairobi, Embu, Nyeri, Garissa, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kakamega and Marsabit or be downloaded from Kenyatta University website at www.ku.ac.ke on payment of non-refundable fee of Kshs. 2,000/- for East African and Kshs. 4,000/- for applicants outside East Africa.
