What is an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. Ultrasounds are commonly used to diagnose problems with the abdomen, pelvis, and heart.

When is an Ultrasound Needed?

An ultrasound may be needed to diagnose a variety of medical conditions, including:

  • Pregnancy
  • Abdominal pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Kidney stones
  • Gallstones
  • Liver disease
  • Heart disease

How to Prepare for an Ultrasound

There is no special preparation required for most ultrasounds. However, for some ultrasounds, you may be asked to drink a lot of water or to have a full bladder.

But for the abdominal pelvic ultrasound, you must not eat food for the last 8 hours. The last time I was there, the ultrasound specialist had to ask me to wait for 8 hours because I had just taken lunch. So, be careful not to waste time if you feel either your kidney, liver, spleen, or organs under the rib cage are hurting. You will be asked to avoid eating for 8 hours to have your ultrasound assessment.

What to Expect During an Ultrasound

During an ultrasound, you will lie on a table and a gel will be applied to your skin. The ultrasound technician will then move a transducer over your skin. The transducer emits sound waves that create images of the inside of your body. The images are displayed on a monitor so that the ultrasound technician can view them.

Benefits of an Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe and effective imaging test that offers a number of benefits, including:

  • It is non-invasive, meaning that no needles or incisions are required.
  • It is painless.
  • It is relatively inexpensive.
  • It can produce real-time images of the inside of the body.
  • It can be used to diagnose a wide range of medical conditions.

Note: You might have to queue for long hours and wait for your patient name to be called to see a doctor or get your ultrasound done. Patience is key in the hospital because it attracts many patients. The last time I was there I had to wait from 2 pm up to 8 pm to get my simple treatment and H pylori and CRP test in the laboratory.
